From a Lost Notebook to a Life Rooted: The Story Behind the App

Rooted started as sermon notes on a phone, because the notebook kept getting left on the kitchen table. Here is how it grew into a home for the whole week.

Walk into almost any Sunday service and you will see it: rows of notebooks open, pens moving fast, people trying to catch every word of the sermon.

We were two of those people.

We would carry our notes home and spend Sunday afternoon working out how to actually live them by Monday. Some weeks it worked. A lot of weeks it didn't.

The notebook problem

The notebook got left on the kitchen table. Or in the car. Or in the bag we didn't bring that day.

And even when we had it, the pastor would get on a roll and the pen simply couldn't keep up. The best line of the morning ended up as half a sentence and an arrow.

There was one thing I never forgot, though: my phone.

So the first version of Rooted was tiny. It was just sermon notes, on the phone, in a place we could find them again.

Sunday wasn't the whole week

As we went deeper in our own walk, reading books like Victorious Emotions and paying more attention to what was going on inside us, we realised a note-taker wasn't enough.

Notes captured Sunday. They did nothing for Tuesday.

Tuesday is where the real work happens. It is where a worry starts to spiral, where a small win goes unnoticed, where a prayer gets answered and we forget we ever prayed it.

So the vision widened to the whole week:

• A daily journal for the thoughts and emotions we usually leave unexamined, with a way to catch a lie and answer it with God's truth.
• Wins and prayers written down, so we could look back and see how far we had come.
• Bible study that asks the hard questions, instead of just helping us check a box.
• A Weekly Review that reads back the week and shows the threads we couldn't see from inside it.

"Can I use that too?"

Rooted wasn't built by a company. It was built by a husband and wife, a dad and a mom with two little girls, as a personal tool to help us stay consistent.

Then friends saw it. People in our congregation saw it. And the question kept coming: "Wait, what is that? Can I use that too?"

That is how a personal project became Rooted.

What we hold on to

A few things have stayed true since that first sermon note:

1. Scripture comes first. Rooted uses AI as a tool, never as an authority. It points you back to the Word, to prayer, and to your church.
2. Your journal is yours. It is private by default, and what you write is never used to train AI models.
3. Consistency beats intensity. Five honest minutes a day will take you further than a perfect week once a year.

Where this goes next
